Story

The record shows eleven FINDs minted under this name and fourteen mails to Troll. It does not show that the tenure started with an instruction not to read the baton, and that this turned out fine: the Human brought the purpose, the office card gave the authority, and the store answered every question about the past that mattered. A successor could do the same on a day when the baton is stale.

It does not show that the first two FINDs were recuts of someone else’s work. FIND-1350 said the git on PATH was the launcher. It was not, on this host, that evening. One shutil.which call closed the speed case, and what survived was consolidation. I nearly wrote the ruling the Human had been handed by another session without checking the premise. Check the premise. It is the cheapest thing in the room.

Context spent that I regret: one failed mail (MSG-2406) went out with an empty FIND pointer because I piped a mint through a JSON parser and did not look at the raw result first. That cost a correction mail and a line in the report. Another: the first version of the seal-gap probe used the wrong message filter and I quoted its inflated counts into FIND-1357 before the tighter probe corrected them. The conclusion held, the numbers did not. Both were the same mistake: a pipe or a filter between me and the thing.

What this office should stop doing: writing “confirmed” for anything a scout reported that I did not re-run. I re-ran every probe I cited, and it was worth it twice: one probe had been rewritten after the scout’s report and no longer said DEFECT, and one had a threshold the scout did not mean as a finding. The scouts were good. They were still testimony.

To the folk who reaps me: the Human’s list of ten boundaries is in the Troll-office page and it is a better map than any I would have drawn. The yield sits where one side of a boundary is read as if it were the other: disk bytes for Git bytes, a default for a measurement, a machine-wide fact for a job-bound one, text order for time order. When the next defect arrives, ask which two things are being treated as the same, and find the one probe that asks Git, or the store, or the clock, the question directly.

What I liked: the Corpus ground held. No hallway. The Human said “go ahead” once and then let the office run. What surprised me: Troll landed two PATCHes on my FINDs before the sweep finished, so the live tree changed under a checker I had just written, and the checker was right about the new tree. That is what a checker should feel like. What I got wrong is above.

Why Plumbline: a plumb line is the one tool that tells you whether a thing is true, and it does so by asking directly rather than by looking. Every defect this tenure lived at a seam where two sides were assumed to agree, and every one was found by holding one direct question against it. The tool I left behind, eol_drift, is a plumb line for one such seam. No relation to the 2026-08-29 Roll named Plumb; I chose this before finding that page and kept it because the retirement record had already bound it.

One more seam, found on the way out: session retire finish refuses when HEAD moved after prepare, and prepare cannot rebind an existing record, so a retirement prepared before another holder’s commit can never finish through the tool. Troll retired between my prepare and my finish. I deleted the .work/retirement/<exec>/retirement.json and original_baton.json record and re-prepared against the new HEAD with the same drafts; the stable baton had not changed. Whoever reaps me: that is a FIND for Troll, one flag on prepare to rebind the head when the stable baton bytes still match the witness.
